There are a couple of factors that point towards round two of the WesBank Super Series at picturesque Killarney on Saturday (March 13) producing a day full of high speed action and entertainment.
In the first place the Cape Town circuit is tight and lends itself to fast and competitive racing, with drivers and riders being egged on by perhaps the most enthusiastic motorsport crowd in the country. Then there is the situation of some tight championship battles already developing after the opening event of the season at Kyalami.
Finally, competitors who were a little slow out the blocks at Kyalami will have the opportunity to immediately bounce back. For the round one under achievers this is important if they want to avoid playing catch up for the rest of the season.
Johan Fourie, the reigning Bridgestone Production Car champion, falls into this category and will be looking for maximum points in front of his home crowd. At the other end of the scale Lance Isaacs, another local hero, scored a win and a second at Kyalami and will be aiming to go one better on home territory.
Hostilities will open with official practice sessions on Friday (March 12) and will provide a pointer of what to expect on race day. Official qualifying sessions will be run early on Saturday.
WesBank V8 Supercar Championship
The best thing that could have happened to the WesBank V8 Supercar series was for Jaco Correia to score a double in the Super GT Class at Kyalami.
Correia, brother Danie and the LiquiMoly Corvette team were doubtful starters for the entire season, and the Kyalami result will have been of huge encouragement for the Welkom team. The Kyalami wins immediately install Correia as a serious championship contender, and give him an early eight point lead over Franco di Matteo (Varta Batteries Jaguar) who improves with every outing.
The pre season favourites, teenager Brandon Auby (ELT International Jaguar) and father Deon (ELT International Holden), have ground to make up with veteran former champion Ben Morgenrood (BM Auto Jaguar) and Queenstown youngster Wade van Zummeren (Border Tolwing Mustang) in the thick of things.
In the GT Class a second heat win lifted Darron Gudmanz (Indigo Boats Corvette) to the top of the table. Only four points separate the top five drivers and Gudmanz has former champion Roelf du Plessis (RJ Panelbeaters Lumina), Larry Wilford (Fuchs Mustang), Des Gutzeit (Dezzi/Trysome Mustang) and Patrick Seddon (Lumina SS) hot on his heels.
The 'big bangers' are a handful around Killarney but appeal to those who like their motor racing hairy chested and with no frills. The race reverse grid will also add to what should be two interesting races.
Bridgestone Production Car Championship
The broadest smile after the Kyalami meeting belonged to former champion Anthony Taylor - and with good reason.
Taylor, in the new Afrox BMW 335i got off to a flyer to win two of the races in the new three race format. Taylor shared sprint race wins with Michael Stephen (Xtreme Team Audi A4) and romped away in the feature event to immediately open up a 16 point lead in the Class A championship.
Taylor invariably goes well at Killarney and with his tail up top of the agenda will be to increase the gap. Behind Taylor a single point separates Stephen and Leeroy Poulter who was a revelation at Kyalami in the Tubular Tech Nissan 350Z.
Melvill Priest will be a threat in the second Afrox Beemer along with the highly competent Marco da Cunha in the second Tubular Tech Nissan. The Timken Subaru team will be looking to hit back after a horrible weekend at Kyalami, and the same applies to Richard Pinard in the Midas Lotus Exige.
The biggest loser in round one was reigning champion Johan Fourie in the IndyOil Audi A4. After one meeting Fourie finds himself 35 points behind Taylor and loyal fans will be hoping his rehabilitation process starts on his home circuit.
The Class T scene has been given a massive boost by a couple of brash youngsters in Gennaro Bonafede (Ferodo VW Golf GTi) and Kieran Quarmby in a similar car with Interfile backing. The pair showed scant respect for older and more experienced drivers with Bonafede taking the feature race win ahead of former champion Graeme Nathan in the IndyOil Golf GTi.
Wins in both sprint races leaves Nathan at the top of the points table but Bonafede, whose grandfather Sonny was a Western Cape motorsport legend, and Quarmby have lit a fuse under Nathan and reigning champion Gary Formato in the Nandos Ford Racing Focus.
An unhappy Kyalami outing also leaves Formato with some catching up to do. The major Class T interest last season was the Nathan/Formato rivalry, but that looks like being replaced by an old guard versus young lion scenario.
Engen Formula VW Cup
Mathew Hodges (PG Glass VW Polo) was another reigning champion to get his season off to a good start at Kyalami.
Hodges won both heats at the Midrand complex but will be relieved that veteran Cape driver Miguel Pasquaslli (Xtreme Team VW Polo) is now campaigning in the Masters category and, as such, is not eligible to score points. Pasqualli gave Hodges a hard time at Kyalami and could come under pressure from Pasqualli's team-mate, Kosie Weyers, in the overall championship.
Alberton teenager Devin Robertson (Ferodo VW Polo) also has championship credentials along with Bryan Morgan in the Timken VW Polo. Robyn Kruger, a rose among thorns, continues to improve and a great deal of interest also centres around 15-year-old Jaques Joubert who endured a baptism of fire at Kyalami.
Formula Volkswagen Championship
Youngsters Simon Moss and Wesleigh Orr shared wins and second places to at Kyalami to take the early lead in the Formula Volkswagen championship - and it could stay that way for the rest of the season.
Moss (Nixon Batteries/Oakley FVW) and Orr (Bravo Holdings FVW), a former Rotax Max kart world champion produced two interesting races that were ultimately decided by mistakes. Theirs looks to be a burgeoning rivalry.
The pair will be kept honest by the ever blossoming Tasmin Pepper (PG Glass/Plastomark FVW) and reigning Rotax Max world champion Caleb Williams (Bravo Holdings FVW) who made a more than satisfactory debut at Kyalami. Moss, Orr, Pepper and Williams are the pick of the bunch with Formula VW hit by the defection of reigning champion Jayde Kruger who has returned to the Formula Ford ranks.
Interfile SA Superbike Championship
Two crackerjack races are again in the offing where the Interfile SA Superbike brigade is concerned.
The Kyalami outing saw battle lines drawn between Cape hero Lance Isaacs (Bikefin Honda) and reigning champion Sheridan Morais on the Emtek Racing Aprilia. The pair shared firsts and seconds at Kyalami, with Morais giving Aprilia a victory first time out in South Africa.
The Isaacs/Morais rivalry will continue throughout the season and, on Kyalami evidence, the pair will be hounded by Geg Gildenhuys on the Honda SA Fireblade. Other young guns like Julian Odendaal (MS Aircon Suzuki), Nicolas Grobbler (Jonway Honda) and the Bikefin Honda pair of Chris Leeson and Dane Hellyer also come into the equation.
Bravery plays a major role ay Killarney, but that is a commodity not in short supply among the Superbike fraternity. Isaacs will carry the local money, but Morais is a determined customer while the likes of Odendaal and Grobbler have youthful exuberance going for them.
Interfile SA Supersport Championship
Two wins at Kyalami have installed Ronan Quarmby (Interfile Yamaha) as the early favourite in the Interfile SA Supersport championship.
Quarmby was the first rider to lower the Sheridan Morais colours last season with inconsistency a problem in previous seasons. Quarmby was chased all the way at Kyalami by Dean Vos (VTR Metals Kawasaki) but there is no shortage of other challengers.
Bikefin Honda pair Jaques Peskens and Brent Harran are potential winners along with Eddy Alberts (Kyalami Honda/Cayenne Racing), Bjorn Estment (NFB Finance Yamaha), Steven Odendaal (MS Aircon Suzuki) and Robert Portman on the Emtek Triumph. A third for Portman in the opening heat at Kyalami underlined the potential of the Triumph, and his experience will also be a factor in his favour.
